Common questions

How much does a police constable take home a month?

In England and Wales, a full-time constable on the first pay point (£32,256 a year) takes home about £1,952 a month after tax, National Insurance and pension. At the top of the scale (£52,014) it's about £2,942. Use the calculator for your own pay point, allowances and student loan.

Does it include the 2026 police pay award?

Yes. The 3.5% award applies from 1 September 2026. The Home Office hasn't published the official pay point tables yet, so the England and Wales figures apply 3.5% to the 2025 scales, rounded to the nearest £3 as pay points always are. We'll switch to the official tables as soon as they're out.

How much do police officers pay into their pension?

In the 2015 scheme in England, Wales and Northern Ireland you pay 12.88% of your pensionable pay if it's £37,035 or less, 13.88% if it's less than £79,588, and 14.22% above that. Officers in Scotland pay a flat 13.7%. Contributions come off before income tax, but not before National Insurance.

Does it work for Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. Scotland uses the Police Scotland pay scales and Scottish income tax bands. In Northern Ireland, PSNI officers are paid on the England and Wales scales plus the Northern Ireland Transitional Allowance (£4,283), and pay UK income tax rates. PCSOs in England and Wales are covered too.

Does it include overtime?

Not yet. The free calculator works out your regular pay. Beatwise's shift log, coming soon, adds overtime, rest days cancelled, bank holidays and unsocial hours, and shows which month each one is likely to be paid.
